Our Roofer gave us a big tip when we were getting a new roof and new gutters. He said that he is kept very busy all winter long because of the ice damming damage caused by gutters with leaf covers and the so called "Clog Free" gutters. You know those expensive gutters that are guaranteed not to clog.

If you live in a cold, snowy region, you already know about the damaging effects of ice dams. The gutters clog up with ice, then water runoff from the roof gets trapped by the dam and eventually backs up the roof, travels under the shingles, and leaks into the house.

It's cheaper to hire someone to clean out the gutters once a year than to fix all of the water damage from ice dams.
